Don was interviewed on August 10, 1977 in Regina, Saskatchewan. Nielson and Malcolm Norris were the two main figures in the birth of the Métis Association of Saskatchewan (MAS) – the northern Métis organization. Norris considered Nielson the most promising prospective leader of the Métis. Nielson talks about the MAS and about Norris, especially the early days of organizing, Norris the man and leader, anecdotes, etc. Included in this is a discussion of early organization of the Association: where and how meetings were held, differences between the Métis group in the north and south of the province, Norris's fight against government funding, Norris: his style, his health, his family, his relations with government and with the Church. During the second interview, Don discusses problems within Aboriginal organizations between north and south, status and non-status and Liberal and CCF, details of the meetings conducted in northern communities by Malcolm Norris when he was organizing the MAS. Don also mentions sports, religion and discrimination against Métis people. |
