Mary was born in Crooked Lake, Saskatchewan. She is one of thirteen children and her mother was a midwife – because of this her and her siblings did a great deal of babysitting. Each of the children also picked seneca root, hauled wood, wash clothes, and cook as part of their chores. She got married in Crescent Lake and while the men hunted, the women picked seneca root. Together they had eight children and they have many grandchildren. She played card games and outside when she was a young girl. Mary did a lot of hunting, fishing, and trapping when she was a young lady, as well as sewing. She shares some funny traditional wedding stories and things they used to do to the bride. Mary grew up surrounded by the Michif language and her children understand the language. However, some of her grandchildren do not understand the language. |
