Description: |
This is a map of St. Laurent, Saskatchewan an historic Métis community and the place where the Métis, under the leadership of Gabriel Dumont, established a shortly lived self-governing council. The Northwest Mounted Police ended the experiment in self-government in 1873 after the local Métis tried to enforce a bylaw preventing people from abusing the depleting bison resource. The map was originally produced by the Gabriel Dumont Institute for the CD-ROM, "The Metis: Our People, Our Story". |
