In this image, Elder Ronald Lepine is indicating where the Métis entrenchments were during the Battle of Batoche (May 9-12, 1885). Overlooking the battlefield is the South Saskatchewan River. Deryk Bodington (1914-), a professional photographer and a freelance writer working out of Calgary, Alberta, donated these images to the Gabriel Dumont Institute. The images were taken in the 1950s-70s and centre on Batoche and its environs. Bodington also donated photographs to the Glenbow Museum and Archives in Calgary and to the National Archives of Canada in Ottawa Ontario. He specialized in Western-Canadian landscapes and rural heritage. |
