Description: | These pages contain an image with three sketches relating to Toronto’s preparations during to assist the Canadian Army during the 1885 Resistance. Captions include: (1) “Interior View of the Premises at No. 73 King Street East”; (2) “Typical Sketches”; and (3) “Exterior View of the Premises at No. 73 King Street East”. May 9, 1885. The sketch of image no. 1 show women and a few men packing boxes of supplies for three Toronto-based battalions: The Royal Grenadiers, the Governor General’s Body Guards and the Queen’s Own Rifles. The sketches of women in panel no. 2 demonstrate an idealized view of contemporary Anglo-Protestant women during the 1885 Resistance. This view of the “prim”, “proper” and “delicate” white woman is the opposite image of First Nations and Métis women appearing in contemporary Euro-Canadian illustrations. The 1885 Resistance engendered a great of patriotic fervor in Canada. As a result, thousands volunteered their time to make life easier for the Canadian soldiers. |
