Description: | This page has six sketches, by W. D. Smith, in a green and vertical format of Battleford and vicinity. The captions of the of the images include: (1) “Fort Otter, Battleford”, (2) “The Hospital Tent”, (3) “Prisoners going out to chop wood under escort”, (4) “Fort Pitt evacuated by Inspector Dickens and his detachment of N.W. Mounted Police, after an heroic defence”, (5) “Jolly Scouts preparing for Supper” and (6) “Scouting in Poundmaker’s Reserve”. Image no. 4 has stereotypical portrayals of both a First Nations and a Métis prisoner. Images nos. 5 and 6 also portray Métis scouts (likely English Métis) in a more positive fashion. Image (3) provides an illustration of the fall of Fort Pitt by Big Bear’s band after Inspector Francis Dickens (the son of the author Charles Dickens) and his small force tried to defend it. At the time, Dickens was feted for his bravery throughout the British Empire. He presided over the execution of Eight First Nations warriors executed on November 27, 1885 at Fort Battleford. They were: Kapapamahchakwew, Itka, Wawanitch (Man Without Blood), Napase (Iron Body), Manetchus (Bad Arrow), Pa-pa-mek-sick (Round the Sky), Kitiemakyin (Miserable Man) and Apistaskous (Little Bear). |
