This page contains the official dispatches of General Middleton to the Minister of the Militia and Defence, Adolphe Caron. There is also a discussion that Louis Riel, a naturalized American citizen, could still be tried for treason. One passage shows Middlelton’s assessment of the fall of Batoche – which shows the prejudices of a nineteenth-century British general: “I cannot of course be certain, but I am inclined to think the complete smash of the rebels will have pretty well broken the back of the rebellion. At any rate, it will, I trust, have dispelled the idea that half-breeds and Indians can withstand the attack of resolute whites properly led…” Of note on this page are advertisements that delineate late nineteenth-century tastes. |
