Description: | On this page, (pg. 68, The Canadian Pictorial & Illustrated War News, date unknown), correspondents write about events that took place during the 1885 Resistance including the conclusion of the Battle of Batoche and the capture of Louis Riel. This page contains the official dispatches of General Middleton to the Minister of the Militia and Defence, Adolphe Caron. There is also a discussion that Louis Riel, a naturalized American citizen, could still be tried for treason. One passage shows Middlelton’s assessment of the fall of Batoche – which shows the prejudices of a nineteenth-century British general: “I cannot of course be certain, but I am inclined to think the complete smash of the rebels will have pretty well broken the back of the rebellion. At any rate, it will, I trust, have dispelled the idea that half-breeds and Indians can withstand the attack of resolute whites properly led…” Of note on this page are advertisements that delineate late nineteenth-century tastes. |
