Description: |
Photograph of “Medicines to Help Us,” created by Christi Belcourt in 2003. The painting is a manifestation of her prayers for all things in life to be in balance and in harmony. She includes plants throughout the different stages of their life cycles, signifying their shortness and the inevitability of change. Christi's explanation for this work is that it is “…a painting for the Métis Nation. Each plant depicted is a type of wild plant that can be found in one or all provinces from Ontario to British Columbia. Some of the plants are indigenous to North America…and some are introduced species from Europe, but also have been used by Indigenous people for medicines…the medicines and plants in this painting are my prayers for the Métis Nation to encourage our healing…” This item is part of the Gabriel Dumont Institute Museum Collection. |
