The Métis women at Batoche, Josephte (Paul) Tourond (1831-1928) (pictured in the photograph in front of Edmond and Berthe Boyer’s home at Batoche) and Marguerite (Dumas) Caron were of Cree or Ojibway and French Canadian origin. They still spoke Cree or Saulteaux and practiced traditional medicine. They remained between two worlds and were forced to resort to war to defend their freedom and homeland in 1870 and 1885.
