Mathias Bizimana presents his academic presentation. Paul Chartrand presents on Métis nationalism and Pierre Falcon and takes questions from the audience. Fransaskois scholar Wilfred Denis discusses the meaning of Métis based on a reading John Ralston Saul's "A Fair Country: Telling Truths about Canada" in which the author claims that Canada is a (sociological) Métis country. Wilfrid also argues that the Métis are one of the pillars of Canada along with First Nations and Inuit. Paul Chartrand and others comment on Denis' presentation.
On September 11-13, 2009, many Métis and Francophones travelled to North Battleford, Saskatchewan to hold a roundtable regarding issues of concern for both communities—Founding Peoples of Canada. This was the third travelling roundtable for these communities, and it focused on Métis and Francophones living in the northern part of the province, and was organized by the Institut français, the Assemblée communautaire fransaskoise, and the local Métis community including direct descendants. The event included community roundtables, general interest talks, as well as a special cultural evening featuring well-known artists from both communities including featuring John Arcand, Gilbert Pelletier, Roger Dallaire, Daniel Gervais, Jos Marchildon, Freddie and Clinton Pelletier, the Alexis Normand Trio and others. The Gabriel Dumont Institute also launched its cultural resources, "Pierriche Falcon: The Michif Rhymester". For the launch, Paul Chartrand, the book’s author, discussed the project, and John Arcand, Desmond Legace, and Krystle Pederson preformed Falcon’s timeless songs. |
