Description: | This image is a photograph of the Kajewski site, Métis hivernant (``winterer``) cabins near Elkwater, Alberta. The site is in the Cypress Hills and this particular image was photographed in 1967 by Robson Bonnichsen.
A note from Jack Elliott: These 15 B/W 1967 photos (and a PDF file) which are the only photos I have of the original 1967 Cabin A excavation by Robson Bonnichsen, which initiated Métis archaeology research in Western Canada. I don’t have any recorded descriptions, but there are both before and after personal photos of the Cabin A excavation (following the removal of the artifacts), although I suspect these also include photos of other unexcavated cabins shown to Rob and I by the landowner Lawrence Kajewski in 1967. I participated in the excavation of Cabin A. The excavation of Cabins B and E by myself in 1969 were for my thesis purposes and a cross-check on what had been discovered in Cabin A in 1967. "Men and Mistresses: A Study of the Late Historic Period in the Cypress Hills". Archaeological Society of Alberta, Newsletter, No. 15, pp. 2-8. Edmonton, by Robson Bonnichsen 1967 remains the only published information on the Cabin A excavation. The few Bonnichsen manuscript pages (PDF in the folder) are the only evidence of Rob’s final report on the Cabin A excavation, which was apparently lost from the Dept. of Anthropology, Univ. of Alberta library files following his death in 2004. |
